How to use Photoshop AI generative fill? And how to apply it in our day-to-day design work? by Dana Wu Aug, 2023
AI in Photoshop Beta Create Stunning Images Using Generative Fill
Like PS hasn’t made faking a shot possible for DECADES. I already tried this new feature professionally and the results can be great. Like replacing a necklace on a model or removing unwanted parts. I wouldn’t enjoy “walking around with a camera” if I didn’t think I’m taking pictures of reality, and if there wasn’t any difference between that and generating AI images.
Now the design fun begins like magic Generative Fill will follow your text commands to gather information, create, and design to your wishes. A breakthrough in design and editing as it gives photo editors and designers the option to rapidly create a plethora of new works. John William Morales, better known as Jowi, is a writer, a career coach, a professional photographer, and a leisure pilot. He’s been using, discovering, and exploring PCs since Windows 3.1 and has been on board the Android bandwagon since Froyo. In 2023, he also invested in an iPhone and a Mac, allowing him to cover a wide spectrum of consumer technology. Jowi started writing part-time in 2015 and transitioned to it full-time in 2020.
MidJourney AI Finally Released an In-Painting Feature — This is Game-Changer
A prompt box appears where you can enter text to describe what you want to fill the selected area with. First we need to extend the canvas, so select the Crop Tool from the toolbar. I’ll also show you how to clean up minor problems with the AI-generated content using Photoshop’s new Remove Tool which is another AI-powered feature. As we’ll see, Photoshop fills the extended area with original AI-generated content that matches the lighting, the shadows, the perspective and even the depth of field of the original photo. There are some best practices to keep in mind to get the most accurate results. For example, using two to three lines of text for detection typically yields better matches than just a single line.
I’ve been exploring this tool for a while, and have had way more fun with it than seems appropriate for a serious technology like AI. To blend the two photos together, we must ensure that both images are on the same layer. To do this, select the top layer, then hold Control + Shift + Alt + E (Windows) or Command + Shift + Alt + E (Mac) to tell Photoshop to create a new layer containing all other visible layers.
Photoshop’s generative AI feature can now expand images seamlessly
Make sure to include some of the image itself in the selection. Use the left and right bracket keys on your keyboard to resize the Remove Tool’s brush. Then simply Yakov Livshits paint over any distracting elements to remove them. You’ll see another progress bar, and then three new variations will appear above the previous ones.
Delete any variations you rule out to keep the file size down. You’ll notice that the generative fill taskbar reveals a text prompt input box. By leaving it blank, Photoshop AI examines the pixels in the image and extends them within your selected area.

Clicking on the Generate button sends your image and text prompt to Adobe’s server for processing. You can click the Generate button again if you want even more choices. Adobe Firefly isn’t the only AI image generator out there, but it’s definitely one of the more convenient options now that it’s been integrated into Photoshop.
- Love the subject, but would like a more interesting background?
- Lastly, what happens if you crop tightly around the car above, then give the AI a much larger blank canvas to play with?
- Adobe works around this by only having its model learn from Adobe Stock images and public domain content without copyright restrictions.
- Be sure to leave the text prompt empty unless you want to add something in its place.
- All I had to do was select where the buildings were and hit Generative Fill.
Assess the result and, if necessary, make further adjustments to enhance the blending and overall appearance. You can use tools like the Eraser or the Clone Stamp to refine specific areas manually. Adobe believes that generative AI carries immense power for Photoshop’s creative users, and is excited to begin integrating this game-changing capability into the product from today onwards.
So I thought a realistic exercise would be to take one of our existing photos and try adding a USB cable connecting the two Macs. Adobe PhotoShop has hopped onto the artificial intelligence hype train with some new and exciting features that are making me feel like a PhotoShop wiz again. After decades of using this tool, I have fallen into habits and routines, and I rarely explore new features.
Drop your image into PS, then use the Crop tool to extend the canvas to the size you want. Follow these instructions to access Photoshop’s beta version and explore experimental features like Firefly Generative Fill before they are made available to the general public later this year. And, finally, as I said before, pay attention to exactly how you size and place your selection. That tells the AI a tremendous amount about your intentions for the images you’re asking it to create.
Other generative AI systems have been trained by scraping the internet, which has irked many since it uses their work without attribution, creating a legal grey area. Right now, there’s plenty of hand-wringing over the damage artificial intelligence (AI) can Yakov Livshits do. The move comes as U.S. lawmakers consider how to regulate the new wave of fast-evolving AI technology behind powerful chatbot tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Prompting in Adobe Firefly is much different than Dall-e and Midjourney.
Each of the variations are generated on a single new layer on top of the original photo. You can keep generating images by either reusing your original prompt or by slightly tweaking the prompt to narrow in on the image you’d like created. Once you’ve entered your prompt (or left it blank), simply press “Generate”. Likewise, it won’t be possible to access the Generative Fill tool if the layer is a smart object or an adjustment layer.
